Mediterranean Agriculture Under Pressure: Combating Salinity with Biotechnological Innovation

In recent years, Mediterranean agriculture has been facing an increasing number of environmental challenges linked to climate change. Among the most critical issues are rising average temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, and increased evapotranspiration—phenomena that are progressively altering the availability and quality of water resources. The most affected areas are open-field crops and high-value agricultural zones, where water scarcity and rising salinity are becoming major constraints on productivity.

In this context, the use of saline water for irrigation has become, for many farms, more of a necessity than a strategic choice. Ongoing saltwater intrusion, the reliance on deep wells, and limited access to fresh water are forcing producers to deal with high levels of sodium and other saline elements that are harmful to both soil and crops.

The Effects of Salinity: Soil, Plants, and Profitability Under Stress

Excess salt—especially sodium—causes several agronomic issues. In soil, salinity impairs structure, reducing permeability and leading to compaction, which hinders proper water infiltration and circulation. At the crop level, sodium competes with essential cations such as calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and potassium (K⁺), limiting their absorption by plant roots. This results in weaker plants, stunted vegetative growth, lower yields, and in severe cases, early root system failure.

Not all types of salinity are the same: it’s essential to distinguish between salt accumulation (neutral salts like carbonates and chlorides) and sodic salinity, which involves excess exchangeable sodium in the soil. The latter is particularly harmful to tree and vegetable crops, as it deeply disrupts nutrient dynamics and subjects plants to osmotic and physiological stress.

Technological Solutions: Effective but Not Always Accessible

To counteract salinity, advanced technologies such as reverse osmosis systems are available, which can reduce the salinity levels of irrigation water. However, these systems are energy-intensive and financially out of reach for many small and medium-sized farms. Some producers have turned to alternative methods, such as using artificial reservoirs to mix saline water with rainwater, temporarily reducing electrical conductivity. While these measures provide short-term relief, they do not address the root causes nor do they remediate already compromised soils.

SINSAL: The Biological Technology That Regenerates Soil and Crops

In response to these challenges, Mugavero has developed SINSAL, a biological water and soil corrector based on M.A.S. (Microbial Synergistic Action) technology, designed to tackle salinity in a natural, integrated, and effective way.

SINSAL stands out for its dual synergistic action:

Chemical Action: Thanks to the presence of calcium lignosulfonates—compounds that bind sodium and reduce its availability in the soil—SINSAL helps improve soil structure and restore its cation exchange capacity.

Microbial Action: Through a consortium of halophilic bacteria (salt-loving microorganisms), SINSAL performs multiple biological functions: sequestering excess sodium, solubilizing phosphates, and stimulating the production of siderophores—molecules that enhance the plant’s uptake of micronutrients.

This biological approach not only mitigates the effects of salinity but also regenerates the soil microbiome, making the root environment more active, balanced, and productive.

Case Study: Citrus Growers in Ribera (AG), Sicily

One of the clearest examples of SINSAL’s effectiveness comes from the Ribera area in the province of Agrigento, renowned for its Ribera IGP Oranges. When the local irrigation network cannot provide adequate water, citrus growers are forced to irrigate using water from the Magazzolo River or private wells, often containing sodium concentrations between 400 and 750 mg/L.

Considering that the recommended sodium threshold for citrus irrigation is 100 mg/L, with critical limits above 200 mg/L, this scenario is highly concerning.

Thanks to the use of SINSAL in fertigation, these farms have been able to:

Lower the electrical conductivity of both water and soil,

Significantly improve soil structure,

Eliminate visible salt stress symptoms on plants,

And most importantly, achieve higher-than-expected yields, even during dry years.

A New Alliance Between Agriculture and Biotechnology

In conclusion, SINSAL offers a practical, affordable, and sustainable solution for farmers operating in salinity-prone regions. It’s a valuable ally for those seeking to restore soil productivity, improve crop resilience, and protect profitability—without resorting to high-cost or environmentally taxing technologies.

Agricultural biotechnology can—and must—support sustainability and regeneration. SINSAL is a shining example of this potential, capable of bringing life, balance, and prosperity back to soils threatened by salinity.

The effect of climate on cereal crops

The ups and downs of the climate inevitably have repercussions on the yield and quality of the autumn-winter cereal crops which are traditionally grown dry. There are tools available to the field operator to allow the achievement of the best quantitative-qualitative result: the use of technologically innovative fertilizers on the one hand, agronomic techniques on the other, in a global management perspective according to the principles of ‘agriculture 4.0: thanks to the application of digital technologies, farms, especially those that deal with cereal crops, can increase profit, economic and environmental sustainability.

It is a fact that the farmer must respect the time windows useful for each cultivation operation by integrating takeaways with targeted and balanced nutrition in respect of soil fertility and at the same time be timely in the treatments to be carried out.

It is necessary to work, for the different production areas at different latitudes, on a shared supply chain path, achieving common objectives in quantitative/qualitative terms; the awareness remains that the productions in Italy of areas suitable for wheat are still insufficient to satisfy the needs of the Italian pasta industry.

The Mugavero protocol on cereal crops

The Mugavero production protocol for cereal crops presents consolidated results in terms of yield-quality combination and provides for the use of “slow release” nitrogen fertilizers with a high technological level such as the MIDOTEC line and the AUREA line respectively for bottom fertilization and cereal cover.

Midotec

The fertilizers of the Midotec line contain the 3.4 DMPP inhibitor of soil bacteria responsible for nitrification, therefore they must be buried to best express the characteristics of the fertilizer.

Aurea

Unlike the traditional nitrogen fertilization with urea that the farmer carries out “running” after the rains, the use of the Aurea fertilizer containing the urease inhibitor NBPT makes it possible to program the fertilization comfortably, regardless of the onset of rain cover nitrogen. Aurea also has the further advantage of canceling the nitrogen losses due to volatilization that occurs with the distribution of urea.

Canta and Supra

The protocol also includes a biostimulant, CANTA, and a foliar fertilizer, SUPRA.

Canta is recommended for application with weed control to reduce the stress of the herbicide on the plant; it promotes the development of roots and allows for a better-structured plant and ear. Supra has instead been studied for foliar application to complete the nitrogen requirement of the crop in the last stage of crop growth. Unlike other formulations, Supra can be used at high doses per hectare without the risk of creating phytotoxicity, even when mixed with fungicides. The application of Supra ensures, in all circumstances, the achievement of a satisfactory protein content.

Protocol Mugavero on Fennel

Fennel is one of the few items in the fruit and vegetable supply chain to be produced in Italy and has no foreign competitors on the shelves of large-scale distribution. The increase in raw material costs, both in the fields and in the warehouse, is penalizing the fennel supply chain. Plastics, paper, and wood have undergone significant increases, up to 50-60%.

Making a difference in the field by reducing waste and improving quality is certainly a challenge to be taken up, in a market that is increasingly attentive to pesticide residues.

Biostimulants and Resistance Inductors

Mugavero proposes a fertilization plan for fennel that provides for the foliar application of biostimulants and resistance inducers.

Radico Gel

In the post-transplantation it is suggested to intervene with RADICO GEL at a dose of 5 liters per hectare: thanks to its gel formulation it guarantees persistence on plant tissues and as well as providing phosphorus to favor root development it completes the nutritional requirement of meso and microelements.

Macal and Canta

During the growth of the clot, weekly foliar treatments in a mixture of MACAL together with CANTA are recommended at doses of 5 liters and 2.5 liters per hectare respectively. If MACAL satisfies the needs of the crop in calcium and magnesium, CANTA reduces abiotic and biotic stresses by amplifying the nutritional response and vegetative development.

Statia and Tocuzin

The application of MACAL and CANTA can be alternated with the application in a mixture of two resistance inducers, STATIA and TOCUZIN to be used at a dose per hectare of 5 liters and 2.5 liters respectively. STATIA guarantees energy supply and healing action of the herbaceous tissues of fennel, TOCUZIN health protection from fungi and bacteriosis thanks to the cytotropic action of zinc and copper. Together they guarantee crop health appreciated by the field operator, guaranteeing a “zero residue” product that complies with the quality standards of the large-scale distribution.

Supra

In the lump enlargement phase, at 3/4 of the cycle, to complete the development of the plant, it is recommended to apply SUPRA at a dose of 10 liters per hectare.

The final result of the suggested protocol is an article having size and homogeneity of lump size. At the same time, an absence of rot inside the lump is guaranteed. The waste at the time of harvesting is almost nil.

The Olive tree and the phenomenon of production alternation

The olive tree is, among the tree essences characterizing the Mediterranean landscape, the predominant crop for historicity and culture. In this climatic zone, traditional “dry” olive groves very frequently present phenomena of “production alternation”; the plant produces one year yes (year of charge) and one year no (year of discharge) due to an “alternating” competition between vegetative and reproductive organs.

Responsible for the alternation are certainly environmental factors (drought, brightness, and cold) and factors related to the not-always-optimal management of the olive grove such as tillage, pruning, and/or irrigation, which can influence the flower differentiation of some gems.

The productivity of the olive grove can become “regular” by restoring the natural vegetative-productive balance: this goal can be achieved through accurate mineral nutrition and the adoption of appropriate agronomic techniques.

To increase the productivity of the olive tree, a rustic and long-lived tree species, it is necessary to maintain a high nutritional level of the plant; it is a crop greedy for nitrogen which, in order to be able to produce annually and constantly, requires nitrogenous fertilization along the production cycle.

How to intervene on the olive according to Mugavero

To intervene correctly it is necessary to know the floral biology of the olive tree and for this purpose we remember that “the induction to flower” takes place in the period of July, “the initiation of the flower buds” in the period of December/January while “the differentiation ” in the period of March. A certain number of cold days is required to induce the initiation phase of the flower buds; mild winters determine an almost uninterrupted vegetative phase, negatively affecting the subsequent phase of floral differentiation.

Soil management

As regards the fertilization of the olive grove, Mugavero offers solutions for the different company needs of soil management: MIDOTEC, AUREA, and MIREA are the three lines of “slow release” nitrogen fertilizers with different mechanisms of action to reduce losses of nitrogen by volatilization or leaching and to increase the availability of nitrogen for the plant, guaranteeing a progressive and prolonged nutritional supply over time. The choice of one line of fertilizers over another depends on the company’s operating methods: if the olive grove is managed with tillage involving the burial of the fertilizer, in this case, the use of MIDOTEC is recommended, if The olive grove is managed with “conservative” techniques of soil fertility such as minimum or zero tillage, in this other case the choice can fall on AUREA or on the more innovative MIREA line of fertilizers with double inhibitor.

Nutrition of the olive tree

Other innovative solutions in terms of foliar application are proposed by Mugavero with the aim of optimizing plant nutrition and enhancing the plant’s productive response:

1. GRAN RISERVA, a biostimulant applied by foliar application on olive trees from the “flower bud initiation” phase to the “flower differentiation” phase, satisfies the initial nitrogen requirement and supplies the “energy” necessary for the plant for subsequent flowering. It is recommended to mix with TOCUZIN, a resistance inducer, to ensure a disinfectant action of plant tissues and “increase” the plant’s resistance to cold.

2. In the flower differentiation phase, we suggest the foliar application in a mixture of MUGASOL GEL VEGETO and KELPSTAR BORO which completes the nutritional needs of the plant and significantly accelerates the cell multiplication processes. The mixture, already acidified, does not require the addition of acidifying or adhesive formulations because the gel formulation, of organic origin, guarantees adhesiveness and persistence on the leaf blade. KELPSTAR BORO favors the anthesis and maturation of the pollen tube and helps the plant to overcome any abiotic stress.

3. In pre-flowering, instead, intervene with MUGASOL GEL RADICO mixed with PETALOSO containing molybdenum: the treatment is particularly suitable for supporting flowering in periods of thermal stress, favoring fruit setting, ensuring quality production.

The Mugavero color protocol

With the imminent Christmas holidays, the campaign in southern Italy for strawberries obtained under greenhouses is about to begin. The Mugavero color protocol comes into play to ensure balanced ripening of the fruit and uniform coloring, and to do so you need to start off on the right foot by intervening in nutrition from the early stages of plant development. The qualitatively appreciable final result can be achieved with balanced fertilization and correct irrigation shifts; an error in the management of the plant by the operator can postpone the collection of fifteen days with respect to the expected collection date.

Starting from the planting out of the plant, regular foliar applications of STATIA, a “zero residues” resistance inducer, help to intervene in the vegetative-productive balance of the plant, strengthening the plant without enhancing the vegetative vigor.

Upon completion of the enlargement phase, when the strawberry begins to “whiten”, the application of NIGER 700 and UPPER GROW in fertigation provides the plant with the correct push to accelerate the “ripening” processes and compensate for some nutritional deficiencies of the fruit.

NIGER 700 is a water-soluble fertilizer with a sub-acid reaction with humic and fulvic acids, which combines organic acidification with the right amount of potassium readily available for the plant; UPPER GROW, on the other hand, is a biostimulant with organic acids enriched with macroelements which improve the consistency and shelf-life of the harvested product. UPPER GROW can also be used for foliar application, helping to increase the sugar/acid ratio of the strawberry; mixed with GEL MATUR, NPK fertilizer in an exclusive gel formulation with chelated microelements, it ensures an improvement in the consistency and final organoleptic qualities of the fruit.

The expectations of extra-early strawberry productions are often not very high, especially in terms of flavor: when harvested, strawberries must have a “fragrance” and a “strawberry flavor”: this is what the Mugavero protocol guarantees, in addition to color and ” in the post-harvest.

The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is, in Mediterranean environments, an arboreal essence traditionally considered “deciduous”, that is, it loses its leaves in autumn; yet, in some areas of the Sub-tropic evergreen varieties are cultivated which, with appropriate controlled defoliation techniques, can produce fruits with different phenological cycles, so as to produce in three different periods. Recently, hybrids of deciduous and evergreen varieties have been created in Israel which in the conditions of southern Israel can produce in two periods, January and June.

The bright red of the pomegranate fruit is certainly attributable to the colors of nature which are tinged with autumn and open the doors to winter. It should be noted that the fruit is harvested in relation to the specific characteristics of the cultivated variety, some of which have an external skin color predominant on yellow, others on an intense red when ripe. The thick-skinned fruit is characterized by a high content of flavonoids, highly antioxidant principles, mineral salts (based on potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and iron), vitamins of groups A, B, and C, fibers, and sugars.
As far as the aesthetic quality of the fruit is concerned, one of the problems of this crop concerns skin burns which are the consequence of solar radiation associated with high temperatures; this aspect should not be underestimated in the calculation of production yields as, especially in the first years after planting, the slightly expanded foliage does not protect the fruit from sunstroke and 30% of the fruit can be damaged by blanching.

Another peculiar problem of the pomegranate is the cracking of the fruit, especially near ripening: these symptoms are attributable to irrigation shifts that are not always correct but above all to nutritional aspects of the fruit linked to potassium, due to nutrient deficiency or sub-optimal ratios of the same. in relation to other mesoelements (K / Ca, K / (Ca + Mg, N / K).
Mugavero proposes UPPER GROW and STATIA, a potassium-based organic biostimulant and a resistance inducer to be applied by foliar application in the fruit swelling and ripening phase. Two or three applications of UPPER GROW and STATIA meet the energy demand of the plant to complete the ripening and coloring phase. The fruit acquires intensity of color, health, and brilliance much appreciated by the farmer; even the less brightly lit fruits inside the foliage color without difficulty. The optimal delivery of potassium helps to increase the resistance of the fruit to cracking, increase the synthesis of sugars and reduce acidity. Seeing is believing … word of Mugavero.

In September transplants for open field crops and for those in a protected environment, the time has come, after the plant has overcome the transplant stress and is in the middle of the vegetative phase, to think about reinforcing the vegetative organs to reduce the susceptibility of itself to fungal diseases before temperature fluctuations catch the crop off guard. Any “higher” autumn thermal values also end up favoring vegetative growth by putting the plant into vegetation when instead it is time to promote flower differentiation.

We also remember that, with the arrival of winter, the soil temperatures will slowly drop; temperatures below 18 ° C reduce the plant’s ability to assimilate phosphorus, so what the plant had accumulated must be enough for the completion of the production cycle. However, it often happens that the plant goes into an energy deficit: in the cauliflower or broccoli plant, for example, the release of the flower head is delayed.

Mugavero takes the field with STATIA to solve these problems; it is a resistance inductor enriched with lignosulfonates specially designed for foliar application to give new energy to the plant.

STATIA performs a triple action: it nourishes the plant, thickens the leaf blade, and makes it less susceptible to attack by fungal diseases by shifting the source-sink balance towards production. An integrated defense strategy, it makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of pesticides that can be used for the fungicide defense against powdery mildew, downy mildew, and botrytis. It can be mixed with all formulations on the market, it also has a healing action: after a hailstorm, for example, it is desirable to intervene with STATIA for rapid healing of damaged tissues.

Used regularly from 3 to 5 times during the normal vegetative-productive cycle, it allows obtaining a plant with a beautiful green color and healthier. The best structure of the leaf and therefore of the plant results in a more homogeneous and performing plant in terms of production.
STATIA does not create residues and has no shortage times, allowing for regular harvesting, a very important aspect for these types of crops.

In the south of Italy, strawberry transplants in protected crops began a few days ago. To help the seedling in its “planting” it is necessary to think about promoting rooting and favoring the enlargement of the crown to better prepare the differentiation to flower. Mugavero offers two of its products for this very delicate phase of the strawberry, NIGER 650, the water-soluble with Leonardite extracts specific for rooting, and CANTA, a new generation biostimulant.

In protected strawberry cultivation, NIGER 650 is appreciated for its particular formulation with high solubility sub-acid reaction; applied in fertigation post-transplantation, it promptly induces the emission of new roots. The treated plant darkens and takes on brilliance a few hours after application.

In order to enhance the effectiveness of NIGER 650, it is recommended to add CANTA biostimulant during fertigation, containing an organic matrix readily assimilable by plant tissues and bioactive molecules produced by Streptomyces sp. Bacteria: applied as in this case by the root it ensures a more robust and renewed and prolonged effect over time on the development of the epigeal and hypogeal organs of the plant; it strengthens the vascular system, especially in conditions of biotic and abiotic stress. Its application does not disturb any inocula based on Trichoderma spp, on the contrary, it can be a support for the same in times of the year of sudden lowering of temperatures when the low temperature severely limits the activity of mycorrhizal fungi.

The results of the application of CANTA are undisputed and appreciated by the farmer: it is easy and quick to use in the preparation of the final solution as it does not require “dead” times for a preventive activation of microorganisms, it can be used in strategies combined with chemical control and it can be mixed with bactericidal substances (copper and derivatives) and/or disinfectants (hydrogen peroxide). Finally, CANTA, applied by foliar application, can be used in combination with “heavy” pesticides, reducing the stress induced on the plant by the fungicide.

The increase in business management costs nowadays requires particular attention to autumn and winter fertilization; from this point of view, the foliar application comes to the aid of the farmer by representing an “economically” valid choice with very high efficiency.

GRAN RISERVA

Gran Riserva is a foliar biostimulant that provides the plant with the “energy” necessary to complete the phylloptosis and maturation of the wood; it allows the plant to “rest” at its best by intervening when it is time to slow down the vegetative activity and accumulate the reserve substances essential for the next year’s production cycle.
The correct accumulation of reserve substances is evident, in many cases, with an evident swelling of the bud, especially on some fruit species such as stone fruit and kiwi: the plant thus treated quickly acquires greater resistance to biotic and abiotic agents, improving resistance to cold and to pathogens. This is made possible by the presence of lignosulfonates which give the product marked surfactant and sequestering properties with regard to the microelements present (Zn and Mn).

Gran Riserva is applied post-harvest: it is also effective on already defoliated branches as it is absorbed by the cell walls of the wood and bud, also exerting a healing action.
According to the vegetation cover:
Use the highest dosage if the plant has not yet lost its leaves (LAI equal to 1);
Use the lowest dosage if the plant has lost at least 50% of its leaves (LAI equal to 0.5).

The barattiere is an ecotype of the Cucumis melo L. species typical of the Apulian area south of Bari, widespread between the territories of Polignano a Mare (BA), Monopoli (BA), and Fasano (BR).

The edible part of the cultivated vegetable has intermediate qualitative characteristics between cucumber and melon and is represented by the immature fruit that is normally consumed as an alternative to cucumber, compared to which it is more digestible due to the absence of cucurbitacin.

This “niche” vegetable crop is included in the list of Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) of the Puglia Region.

The planting of the Barattiere takes place by direct sowing or transplanting in the open air, in small tunnels, or in a greenhouse to anticipate or delay the harvest from spring to early autumn. The plant takes on a garment appearance with dark green, thin stems, and very long internodes and produces an average of 6 to 12 fruits per plant. Harvesting is done by hand, gradually when the fruits have a firm and crunchy pulp.

What does Mugavero Fertilizers recommend for the Apulian Barattiere?

Mugavero recommends intervening with Niger L to improve the vegetative-productive growth from transplantation to fruit set and with Niger 700 to promote the enlargement of the peponide.

Niger L is a physioactivator with a high concentration of fulvic acids extracted from Leonardite and is characterized by an acid pH that improves its penetration into plant tissues: used both by foliar application and for fertigation at the label dose, alone or in a mixture. , it can be included in conventional cultivation programs to promote cell distension and the development of both biomass and root systems; the treated plant improves by vegetative-productive growth and therefore the yields in both qualitative and quantitative terms: NIGER L stimulates the early and vigorous development of the roots, the vegetative drive ensuring a prolonged vegetative-productive activity over time.

NIGER 700, on the other hand, is particularly suitable in the phases of fruit enlargement and ripening: with the presence of humic and fulvic acids and a not indifferent mineral component, consisting of Nitrogen (both in ammonia and nitric form), Phosphorus, Potassium and chelated microelements, the NIGER 700 turns out to be the extremely complete product for plant nutrition.

Applied in fertigation, it allows to obtain a more compact plant with shorter internodes and particularly resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses; it also provides the plant with the correct boost to accelerate the fruit “ripening” processes.

To the continuous demand for more performing technical means for agriculture, Niger L and NIGER 700 certainly represent a concrete answer for their high nutritional and economic efficiency, as they are capable of making “zero residues” quality agriculture sustainable.
